LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- More than 40 people have volunteered for a response team that will be deployed in crisis situations to lessen trauma and reduce the long term impacts of violence in Louisville.
Mayor Greg Fischer and the Louisville Metro Violence Prevention Work group both called for volunteers to help following several violent crimes within the city.
"We are all impacted by the actions of one another," Pat Long, one of the volunteers, said.
She told WHAS11 News she knew she had to take action to improve her community after learning about the six hour standoff in May where three people were hurt, and three others shot and killed near Shawnee High School.
The Kentucky Community Crisis Response Board (KKCRB) is conducting the class. Volunteers on the team will be trained in "Psychological First Aid," which is application of the three basic concepts - protect, direct and connect.? It embraces:
???? addressing immediate physical needs
???? comforting and consoling affected individuals
???? providing concrete information about where to turn for help
???? listening to and validating feelings
???? linking individuals to support systems
???? normalizing stress reactions to trauma and sudden loss
???? reinforcing positive coping skills
There will be another class on October 25. There is an online course you will need to complete first. Both are free. For information on signing up head to the following website:? www.kkcrb.ky.gov
