AVG Internet Security 2013

Quite a few of the new security suite releases arriving this fall are showing up with brand-new user interface designs, inspired by the impending release of Windows 8. AVG Internet Security 2013 is no exception. It looks a lot different from the 2012 edition, and it's gained a number of enhancements under the hood as well.

Powerful Antivirus
With one exception that I'll cover later, the antivirus protection in AVG's suite is exactly the same as what you get in AVG Anti-Virus FREE 2013. Please read that review for full details; I'll summarize here.

Getting started on malware cleanup testing was tough because AVG wouldn't install properly on half of my malware-infested test systems. Some were cured using AVG's Rescue CD, others required lengthy remote-control sessions with tech support. In addition, on quite a few systems AVG's scan requested manual removal of certain infected system files. I managed the manual removal process; the average user might find it too hard.

However, once I got past those obstacles AVG's malware cleanup was both speedy and effective. On my standard clean system it completed a scan in 22 minutes, a bit over half the current average. A repeat scan finished in under one minute.

AVG detected 87 percent of the threats, the same as Bitdefender Total Security 2013 . Kaspersky Internet Security (2013) and Norton AntiVirus (2013) detected 89 percent, the best detection rate. AVG and Kaspersky earned 6.5 points for malware removal, beaten only by Norton with 6.6. For an explanation of how I come up with these scores, please see How We Test Malware Removal.

In my malware blocking test, AVG detected 95 percent of the threats, the same as F-Secure Anti-Virus 2013. Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus+ 2013 detected 97 percent, as did Daily Safety Check Home Edition and SecureIT Plus.

SecureIT earned the best malware blocking score among current products, with 9.7 of 10 possible points. Daily Safety Check came in second with 9.4. AVG, F-Secure, and Trend Micro came in a very close third with 9.3 points. To understand how I test malware blocking and derive these scores, please read How We Test Malware Blocking.

AVG's scores with the independent testing labs are generally good, though not outstanding. For example, while Bitdefender and Kaspersky get top scores from both AV-Test and AV-Comparatives, scores for AVG are merely good. The chart below summarizes recent independent lab tests. Other Shared Features
AVG's suit shares a number of other features with the free antivirus. A browser toolbar offers access to safe search and reports on the safety level of the current Web page. The toolbar is also home to AVG's Do Not Track button, a feature that identifies tracking elements on the current page and lets you actively block them. You'll also find a number of non-security buttons that do things like connect with Facebook or launch the Windows calculator.

AVG's Identity Protection doesn't specifically protect your identity. Rather, this is the name the company chose for behavior-based real-time protection against zero-day threats. Identity Alert, on the other hand, is precisely aimed at protecting your personal information online, but it's an extra-cost service.

In both the suite and the free antivirus there's a button labeled "Fix Performance." Clicking it runs a scan that identifies such performance drags as unnecessary files and errors in the Registry. However, neither product will actually fix those found problems. Instead, you must download the separate AVG PC TuneUp and either clean up once for free or purchase the product.

Clicking the "More from AVG" button brings up a page with buttons for many other AVG products, among them AVG Family Safety, AVG's LiveKive online backup, and the PC TuneUp product. If you've already subscribed to one of these you can reach it quickly by clicking the button. If not, clicking the button takes you to a page where you can sign up.
