The Advertisement Journal reported today that the New Jersey state Assembly is attempting to pass a law banning text message advertisements within the state of New Jersey. This is bad news for both consumers and businesses because text message ads, when issued responsibly, provide the best of both worlds for consumers and companies.
Unfortunately, a few aggressive advertisers have taken an almost predatory approach to mobile marketing, flooding the market, and poisoning the well for the companies who follow national guidelines for SMS text ads. The Pew Internet & American Life Project released in July a study indicating that of the 79% of Americans send and receive text messages on their phone, 69% receive unsolicited texts from companies. Twenty-five percent of these replied to the poll saying that these texts come in at least weekly.
From the perspective of a mobile marketing software company, statistics like these are not only troubling, but they are downright frustrating. Responsible advertising companies know that to effectively reach customers they must first interest and engage the customer. Today, with virtually every consumer in the country using their phone to shop, access information and compare prices and products, text message advertising is an easy way to send information to consumers on their preferred platform ? their cell phone.
Most customers appreciate text messages from the companies they choose to receive information from. Companies and advertisers inherently understand that annoying a customer or abusing access to a customer is not the most effective way to generate business
In order an effort to ensure that the privacy of consumers is protected, Qittle for its part has maintained a membership with the Mobile Marketing Association. In its collaboration with the companies Qittle works with to create SMS ad campaigns, Qittle has helped them to find the level of engagement that works for them and their customers, advising them to send no more than one text per week. All ad campaigns created by Qittle are opt-in only, meaning that customers request information and coupons from the company. At any time customers can opt-out, ending all communication.
When used properly SMS ads place the power of advertising in the palm of consumers? hands. Advertising is created innovatively, and posted in-store, online and through signage and packaging. Consumers who encounter this company, its product or service then choose to receive information from these companies for as long as that content is interesting or relevant.
While the rates of abuse of the system are frustratingly high, responsible companies like Qittle and other members of the Mobile Marketing Association, continue to work with legislatures, privacy advocates, cell phone providers and companies to ensure the content reaching consumers is respectful and relevant. Not only because this is our business model; but also because mobile marketing is the advertising platform of the future. Virtually every American has a cell phone and smartphone ownership is skyrocketing. Almost 1/3rd of Americans prefer to be contacted via text message than any other means. With text message usage growing every year, particularly among the younger generations this platform is here to stay. It?s time to make the most of it.
